The short answer: "real-time" means wildly different things between trackers. Measured across 13,492 live position updates over seven days (July 2026), Oculamor's median update interval while driving is 2 seconds, with 9 in 10 updates arriving within 3 seconds. Among rivals that publish figures, Zubie reports every 5 seconds (with a 1-minute map refresh), CarLock every 30 seconds (15 on its Plus plan) and MotoSafety every minute; Vyncs' base plan is reported at roughly every 3 minutes with faster updates as paid upgrades, though the vendor doesn't publish an independently verifiable figure. Why update frequency matters for a family tracker

An update interval is the gap between position reports while the car is moving. At a 60-second interval, a car doing 30 mph moves half a mile between dots — enough to miss an entire street, a hard stop, or the moment a journey got quick. At 2–5 seconds, the trail is effectively continuous: speed changes, junctions and individual overtakes are all visible. Figures marked "not published" are exactly that — several vendors describe their tracking as "real-time" without stating a number. Where a vendor publishes nothing, be sceptical of numbers you see quoted elsewhere.

Our methodology (and why we publish it)

The Oculamor figure isn't a marketing claim — it's measured from production data. We took every position update recorded across our live fleet over seven days in July 2026 (13,492 samples while vehicles were moving), computed the gap between consecutive updates per vehicle, and excluded trip boundaries. The median gap was 2.0 seconds; the 90th percentile was 3.0 seconds; the mean was 2.8 seconds. That's the real-world figure including network conditions — not a lab number or a best case.

What about insurance black boxes?

A common surprise: black box telematics devices generally don't show anyone a live feed. They record journeys locally and upload in batches — MoneySavingExpert's guide notes data "will usually update after a set period — such as once a week, once a day or after each journey". The box exists to score your driving for the insurer's pricing, not to show a family where the car is or how a journey unfolded. What about AirTags?

An AirTag has no GPS and no mobile connection. It reports a location only when a passing iPhone relays it, which makes it useful for finding lost keys and completely unsuited to following a moving car — on a rural road with no iPhones nearby, it reports nothing at all. It also has no concept of speed, journeys or driving behaviour.

Is a phone app enough?

Phone apps can update quickly when the app is open and the phone cooperates — but background operating-system throttling, dead batteries, and the app simply being switched off all interrupt tracking, and the app follows the person everywhere rather than the car while driving. If you want to see a whole journey — not a breadcrumb trail — the update interval is the first spec to check, and "real-time" claims without a published number deserve a raised eyebrow.
