A family car rarely has one permanent driver. Your son may take it to college in the morning, you may use it for shopping, and a friend may ride along later. A vehicle record follows the car through all three journeys. It does not automatically know which person was at the wheel.
That distinction should shape how you use tracking. A journey record can start a fair conversation about a route, speed or a difficult section of road. It should not be presented as proof of a person’s identity or intention.
What a car-based record can show

What it cannot identify by itself
A car device cannot establish whether your child, you, a partner or a friend was driving. It cannot identify every passenger. It cannot tell whether a driver intended to exceed a limit, whether a vehicle ahead forced a brake, or whether the mapped limit was current and correct.
The same caution applies to phone services. Life360’s Drive Detection guidance says it analyses phone location and activity to determine whether a member is driving. Life360 also documents driver and passenger corrections, which is useful, but a phone-derived classification is still not biometric proof of who held the steering wheel. A phone left in a bag, shared car or passenger seat can complicate the story.
If identity matters, use ordinary corroboration: who had the keys, who booked the car, messages about the trip and the family’s agreed rota. Treat the tracker as one source of context, not a verdict.
A shared-car example
Imagine a hypothetical Saturday trip. The family car leaves home at 09:10, reaches a supermarket, then travels to a sports centre. Oculamor records the journey and a speed marker on one road. At 11:00, a different family member takes the car to work. The device does not switch owners between those journeys; both records remain attached to the car.
The useful review is specific: “The marker appears near the bend at 09:35. Do you remember what was happening there?” The unfair version is: “The device proves you were driving dangerously.” The first invites a memory check and may reveal a map or measurement error. The second turns incomplete evidence into an accusation.
The example is invented. It is not a product test or a claim about how a particular customer journey will look.
How to review a journey fairly
Start with the trip time and route. Confirm that the car was actually being used and who was expected to have it. Look at the whole section around an event rather than a single top-speed number. Compare the available mapped limit with road signs and conditions; a map can be missing or wrong.
Then ask the driver for their account before deciding what the record means. A 38 mph marker on a mapped 30 mph road might be a genuine concern, but it could also be a position-derived estimate near a junction or a road-data mismatch. Oculamor does not turn that marker into a legal finding.
Agree in advance how the family will handle mistakes. The driver should know who can view journeys, when they will be reviewed and whether borrowed-car trips are included. A simple agreement might say: we review selected journeys together, do not message while anyone is driving, check the map before accusations, and revisit the arrangement after a month. These are family commitments, not settings that magically hide destinations.
Passenger and privacy boundaries
Car-based monitoring is narrower than following a person’s phone after they leave the car, but it is not invisible. Journeys reveal destinations, parking locations and routines. A passenger may be in the car without having chosen to be part of a driving record. Explain the device, account access and purpose to the people affected.
The same point applies when the car is borrowed. If a sibling takes it to work, the record is still created. If a friend drives it home, the dashboard does not know that the usual driver was absent. Add borrowed-car trips to the family agreement: say whether they will be reviewed, how a driver can explain an event and how long records are retained under the current service terms. Do not promise that a privacy conversation creates a technical filter for one passenger.
Account roles may also differ. “We can both see the journey” is safer than promising identical dashboards or identical management controls. Confirm which account can change devices, rules or recipients. A parent who pays for a device still has a responsibility to explain access and not use a journey marker as a substitute for listening.
For a practical review, choose one journey rather than searching every trip. Note the purpose, route and conditions. Look at the section that raised a question, then ask the driver what they remember. If the record and memory differ, check the map, timestamp and available data before deciding that somebody is lying. The aim is a repeatable conversation about the next drive, not a permanent scorecard of family members.
