Can Parent Feedback Help Young Drivers Become Safer? What a 2026 Trial Found
A 2026 randomised trial of 240 parent–teen pairs found driving feedback plus parent communication support was associated with 32% fewer recorded risky-driving events. What the research really shows — and what it doesn't.
Every parent of a new driver knows the tension: you want them independent, and you want them safe, and some days those two feel like they pull in opposite directions. The first months of independent driving are a period when young drivers are still gaining experience — and when parents can no longer observe every journey. So a question worth asking honestly: does monitoring a young driver actually change anything?
The short answer: in the largest randomised trial to date, monitoring alone changed nothing — but driving feedback combined with structured parent involvement was associated with a 32% lower rate of recorded risky-driving events and about 46% less mileage spent speeding. The study did not test Oculamor and did not measure crashes. Here is exactly what it found, and what it didn't.
A randomised clinical trial published in JAMA Network Open in April 2026 offers the most useful answer we've seen — and it's more interesting than "yes" or "no". It asked what actually shifts a young driver's behaviour: being watched, getting feedback, or something more.
What the 2026 study actually tested
Researchers at Nationwide Children's Hospital recruited 240 parent–teen pairs through six juvenile traffic courts in Ohio. Every teenager was 16 or 17 and had already received a moving traffic violation — genuinely higher-risk young drivers, not a general sample.
Each car was fitted with a telematics device, and families were randomly assigned to one of three groups:

Over six months, the study recorded 160,095 trips. The primary outcome was the rate of telematics-recorded events — including hard braking, sudden acceleration and high-speed driving — per 1,000 miles. The proportion of mileage driven above posted speed limits was analysed separately.
What "32% lower" actually means
The headline result: the feedback-plus-parent-training group recorded 77.7 risky-driving events per 1,000 miles, against 101.3 in the monitoring-only group. After adjustment, that is a rate ratio of 0.68 — a 32% lower rate of recorded risky-driving events (97.5% CI, 0.51–0.90).
Note what that is and isn't. It is 32% fewer recorded risky-driving events. It is not 32% fewer crashes — the study did not measure crashes, injuries or insurance claims at all.
The speeding result
Speeding was measured separately, as the proportion of miles driven above the posted limit. Compared with monitoring alone:
- Teens receiving feedback only spent about 36% less of their mileage speeding.
- Teens in the feedback + parent training group spent about 46% less.
Notably, the speeding reduction held even for feedback without any parent training — the one outcome where the technology alone moved the needle.
To be precise about what those numbers mean: these were relative differences in the proportion of mileage spent speeding. They do not mean that 46% of participants stopped speeding, that speeds fell by 46%, or that crashes were reduced by 46%. The study did not evaluate Oculamor — it tested a specific US intervention involving drivers aged 16–17 who had already received traffic violations.
Why feedback alone wasn't enough
Here is the finding most coverage misses: on the overall risky-event rate, the feedback-only group showed no statistically significant improvement (rate ratio 0.98 — essentially unchanged from monitoring alone).
Technology alone was not enough to reduce the overall risky-event rate in this trial. The strongest results came when driving feedback was combined with informed, constructive parent involvement. The trial can't isolate which ingredient in that package did the work — but the direct comparison between groups is clear.
Involvement is not surveillance
The parents in the successful group weren't spying. The teenagers knew about the device and saw their own feedback. The training taught parents to discuss the data constructively — noticing improvement, not just policing failure.
That's the difference between "I saw you were speeding again" and "your Tuesday drive was your cleanest this month — what changed?" Same data. Very different conversation.
What this research does not prove
In fairness — and because we'd rather you trust us than be impressed by us:
- It did not test Oculamor. These are not Oculamor results, and we make no claim that our product delivers them.
- It did not measure accidents or injuries. The outcome was recorded driving behaviour.
- The sample was specific: US drivers aged 16–17 who already had a traffic violation, mostly from well-off households. Results may differ for other families, and UK driving conditions differ.
- The parent side was a structured programme — training sessions and ongoing guidance, not just access to an app.
How to talk about driving data with a young driver
Drawing on what the successful group actually did, a practical shape for UK families:
- Be transparent. They know the device is there, and they can see what you see. Covert tracking builds resentment, not skill.
- Review together on a schedule — a short weekly look, not an ambush after a bad trip.
- Agree up front what matters. For most families that's speeding events, not every firm brake.
- Lead with what improved. The fastest way to make a young driver defensive is to only mention failures.
- Let the data end arguments instead of starting them. "No I wasn't" / "yes you were" dies when both of you are looking at the same record.
What this looks like in practice
